INFORMATION CENTRE

Squirrels can be frustrating and interesting. They are the most cunning mammals in your backyard habitat. Squirrels spend a lot of time and energy eating. They eat more than their body weight in food each week. Two pairs of sharp incisors enable squirrels to gnaw through nuts and many feeders. Squirrels can jump up to 5 to 6 feet vertically, and can leap 8 to 10 feet between objects. They have the ability to cling from objects with their back toes, which allows them to hang upside down and use their front paws to hold their food. Many people complain that squirrels are eating the birds' food and destroying the bird feeders.

One option; people are trying, the new varieties of squirrel resistant and squirrel proof feeders, with much success.
One option; people have tried to transport squirrels to another location, this however, has caused squirrels to be traumatized to the point of death during transportation. Younger squirrels simply arrive to fill the void. This is not a recommended option.
One option; people have decided to enjoy squirrels. They have set up feeding stations away from their bird feeders and offer the squirrels dried corn, peanuts, and sunflower seeds. Placing squirrel houses away from human dwellings will help prevent them from nesting in your home and possibly causing damage to the wiring. In the end, most people have learned to co-exist and even enjoy the antics of the wiliest of pests.
