Only a few Woodpeckers live in man-made bird houses, such as, the Hairy, the Red-headed and the Red-bellied. Woodpeckers do not bring nesting material to the birdhouse, since they generally excavate holes in rotten wood, so placing wood chips in the box will help to attract them.

One of the best things you can do for all birds, but especially for woodpeckers, is to NOT cut down old dead trees or branches. These provide insects and homes for many woodpeckers.
